A Web Design story

I am not a guru in online technology, but I hope this does not blot my credibility as I talk to you about what I know about the web.

Good. You are still here.

My first encounter of the web is in college, about six years ago. We were tasked to do research for our thesis. I then realized that doing research work now is just about as easy as picking your nose. Pretty. It took years before I even got curious how web pages were made. I did not even know what a page is from a URL or HTML or CSS. I still do not know. Not from a very technical standpoint, is what I meant.

Experience and countless experiments taught me a lot about web design. Not that I am an expert, but I can certainly deliver the basics.

As the term implies, web design is equivalent to the conceptualization of how your website will look like. It does not end there. This also involves how your website will function. To make an analogy, this is just about the same with what engineers and architects do, albeit this is done in the online world, not physical. I said that because designing for the web is not only an art, it requires planning, sampling, modeling and proper execution.

Before you start tinkering with Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) or Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), you first have to identify your website's audience. Are you building a website for business? If so, what type of merchandise? If it is not a business, perhaps it is an online publication. If so, is it for kids? Teens? Adults?

How your website will look like will depend on your market. Just like product branding, web design is very important before launching your website. Plus, you have to consider the age of your audience. This will determine how computer savvy they are and how professional your website should appear.

Next, what will be your website contain? This plays a critical role in the definition of what you are offering. Remember, whatever does not have anything to do with your purpose should be removed from your web design. One example I can provide is this: if you are a businessman who wishes to sell online, you might want to think twice before putting indecent materials on your web site, unless of course, if what you are engaged in is adult entertainment.

Imagine the impact of interior design to a customer walking in a store. The overall feel of the store, the ambience, and how the merchandise is displayed will affect how long the customer will stay there. This principle also applies with web design. The colors you choose, the layout, and the location of the pictures will definitely affect customer experience.

Many internet surfers do not stay long on a web site if it was designed poorly. Bad layout, poor color selection, misdirection in hyperlinks: all these can shoo your customer or viewer away. Always remember that your viewers do not have the same taste as yours. Your website's overall feel should match the mass you want to cater to, not your own whims.
