HTML Background Color - How it Works
Adding an html background color to a webpage can be one of easiest ways to jazz up the look of a site. But be careful, it can also create a disaster for the overall design of a page. The trick is to be subtle, and choose html colors that compliment, rather than take away from content.
The most important thing to consider in choosing html background color is the amount of contrast it has with the page text. It doesn't take much color in the background to make fonts difficult to read. If you keep in mind that the best choice for readability is black text on white background, that doesn't leave much room to experiment. Not that all backgrounds have to be white, but try to stay conservative in color choices for this delicate part of your page design.
The html tag for background color becomes part of the "body" tag for that page, located immediately following the closed head tag. For example:
(body) tag now becomes (body bgcolor) with="#F5F5F1")
In an html editor, like Dreamweaver, go to the main menu and look for MODIFY and then PAGE PROPERTIES.
The html background color code is a hexadecimal number, a six-digit set of characters that can include just about any combination of numbers 1 - 9 and letters A - F. If you know the RGB values for the color you want to use, you'll need to covert those numbers to the single hex code. Most web graphics editing programs will easily do this for you. If you would like to know how that all works, there are many websites that explain the process.
