Web Design - Choosing the Right Colors
It is advisable not to use more than three colors in a website to meet the criteria. The choice of colors must match, if necessary, to the colors of the organization (including logo colors) and express an atmosphere.
Whatever the choice of colors, it is recommended to establish a predominant color, representing most of the web page, and one or more secondary colors most dynamic (strongest), with lesser extent, in order to put elements out.
The colors have a symbolic implied. It is therefore important to make an informed choice. Indeed, the colors influence the behavior of individuals:
* Physically: appetite, sleep, body temperature, and so on.
* Emotionally: fear, security, happiness, and so on.
* Psychologically: dynamism, concentration, and so on.
The composition of colors has also an influence on the perception of volumes. The composition of colors can provide a sense of well being, both for decoration of a house, as for the design of a website.
* The primary colors (red, yellow, green), "pure" colors, which can't be obtained by mixing other colors
* The secondary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow), obtained by blending equal parts of two adjacent primary colors. The secondary colors are diametrically opposed to their complementary color (subtractive) on the chromatic circle
* The tertiary colors obtained by the mixture of a primary color and a secondary color.
The colors are also categorized in "warm" colors (including tone is close to the red) and "cold" (whose tone is close to the blue).
There are some universal rules governing the harmony of colors, due to the physical properties of the eye. Indeed, when contemplating a color, the eye automatically creates on its contour, a filter of the complementary color. We talk of "simultaneous contrast." With this mechanism, the perception of color depends on the surrounding colors. Thus, the yellow appear more orange when combined with blue and blue appear more purple. A blue next to a red appear green, and so on.
In addition, adjacent colors on the chromatic circle create a sense of balance to the eye, according to the lack of contrast, it speaks of "harmony" analogy.
So there is basically two main ways of choosing harmonious colors:
* Choosing shades of the same color or colors of the same hue whose tones are close
* Mixing colors (hot and cold), remote colors on the color chart. For two colors, choose complementary colors, diametrically opposed, for three colors, the colors chosen should form an equilateral triangle, and so on.
Finally, elements of color generally warm appear larger than elements of cold color.
