What Do You Know About Insomnia

Before going further, its important to define exactly what insomnia is and isnt. Insomnia is a symptom. It is not a diagnosis or an illness. Many factors medical, psychological, medications, diet, among others can cause insomnia. By definition, insomnia is the feeling of not being able to fall asleep or get sufficient sleep when the opportunity arises.

The statistics about insomnia are astonishing. In a survey of Americans, 36 percent complained of some difficulty with sleep in the pervious year. More than one-quarter of Americans said their insomnia was intermittent, while about one in ten described it as chronic. In raw numbers, that means that more than twenty-five million Americans have chronic, continuous problem sleeping.

Unfortunately, many people suffer for years with insomnia before seeking help. Nearly 70 percent of insomnia sufferers never discuss the matter with their doctors. Instead, they learn to cope, even as it disrupts their relationship, their career, their happiness. Coping strategies can be destructive in their own right that is alcohol and sleeping pill abuse, for example. In fact, 40 percent of insomniacs self-medicate with over counter sleep medicines or alcohol.

Many people feed uncomfortable discussing insomnia with their doctors. Only 26 percent of insomnia sufferers tell their doctors about their problem during a visit for another purpose. And only 5 percent see their physician specifically to discuss their sleep problem. About 4 percent of Americans use prescription medicines to help them sleep, and the number is rising rapidly. But except for certain situation, sleeping pills are not the real solution to insomnia and sometime they can make matters worse. Long term use can lead to dependence and addition, even as the medication loses their ability over time to promote sleep.

But there are alternate solutions to sleeping pills. In the age of managed care, however, doctors often are not given time to fully assess your situation. That means the burden often falls on you. First off, remember that insomnia is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It has many causes, and the right one must be found before treatment can begin. Think of it as, say, an incessant cough. The cause could be tuberculosis, cancer, pneumonia, allergies, or a simple cold. Chicken soup and rest might help cold, but it wont do much for lung cancer. The same logic must be applied to insomnia.

Getting to the root cause of insomnia can be tricky. Often multiple factors are at work, building on each other to deprive sleep. Furthermore, insomnia that began because of a medical problem often persists long after the medical problem is solved. This insomnia often cause patient to develop poor sleep habits. Disease can be cured, but habits die hard.
