When LASIK is a Good Choice

LASIK eye surgery can be a blessing for someone who has always had to rely on corrective lenses. It is a major surgery, though, and not a good choice for everyone.

Part of your pre-surgical consultation will involve going over your medical history with your doctor. This is so the doctor can see any possible risk factors that may disqualify you for the surgery or pose a potential risk for you during surgery. To understand why some health conditions can make you a bad candidate it helps to understand the surgery procedure.

LASIK is basically where the cornea is reshaped with a laser. The cornea is the part of the eye that is responsible for blurry vision and other vision distortions. When it is reshaped you will be able to see clearly.

The cornea is like a pressure filled sphere. The pressure in the cornea can change due to hormones and other factors. When it changes the shape may change slightly. If your cornea is not its normal shape during surgery the surgeon will not be able to correctly shape it. Instead it could end up under or over corrected which will cause vision problems.

Some of the things that can cause problems with the shape of your cornea are:

- age

- pregnancy

- health conditions

Age

LASIK is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18 because until that age hormone levels are not stable. Additionally, older women who are in menopause may also have fluctuating hormones.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy and even menstruation can change the cornea. You should not have the surgery while you are pregnant and you should consider talking with your surgeon about your menstrual cycle if you often experience wide hormonal changes during that time.

Health Concerns

One of the major health problems that can affect the eye is diabetes. People with diabetes can get LASIK, but you have to make sure that your surgeon is aware of your condition. Your surgeon and your primary care physician may have to consult with each other in order to ensure you are fine for LASIK.

If you do a very thorough pre surgery consolation with your surgeon you should be able to rule out any possible risk factors that would make you a bad candidate for LASIK eye surgery. In general, most people can qualify for the surgery and will have amazing results.
